A study from Australia has uncovered promising evidence that advanced hybrid closed-loop (HCL) insulin pump systems may do more than just manage blood sugar β they may actually help restore the body's ability to detect dangerous low blood sugar episodes in people who have lost that critical warning ability.
What Is Impaired Hypoglycemia Awareness β And Why Is It So Dangerous?
Most people with Type 1 diabetes can feel when their blood sugar drops too low β they sweat, shake, or feel their heart race. But some long-term Type 1 patients develop a condition called impaired awareness of hypoglycemia (IAH), where those warning signals fade or disappear entirely. - Hypoglycemia episodes were shorter: When lows did occur, HCL users recovered faster β 30 minutes vs. 50 minutes for standard therapy patients.
- Glycemia Risk Index (GRI) was significantly lower: The HCL group scored 38.1 vs. 70.8 for the control group, reflecting an overall safer blood sugar profile.
- Hormonal warning responses partially recovered: After 6 months on HCL, patients showed stronger dopamine and growth hormone responses during low blood sugar events β hormones the body uses to trigger awareness and corrective action. This suggests the automated system may allow the body's own warning mechanisms to begin recovering.

In the United States, an estimated 17β25% of Type 1 diabetes patients develop some degree of impaired hypoglycemia awareness over time.
