A Study from China Reveals Why Fiber Works for Some Prediabetics β But Not Others
A study from China has uncovered a striking finding that could reshape how doctors advise prediabetic patients about diet: whether dietary fiber actually improves your blood sugar may depend almost entirely on the unique makeup of bacteria living in your gut.
Researchers at Shanghai General Hospital and Shanghai Jiao Tong University enrolled 802 adults with prediabetes in a six-month randomized trial. Half received standard care β education and general dietary guidance β while the other half followed a structured dietary fiber intervention. On the surface, the two groups showed no significant overall difference in HbA1c (a key measure of average blood sugar over roughly three months). That result alone would seem discouraging.
