What This Study Found
Researchers tested a fully automated insulin delivery system called CamAPS HX β a "closed-loop" pump that adjusts insulin on its own, without users needing to input anything at mealtimes. The study followed 52 adults with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes (insulin-treated) for eight weeks during normal daily life.
Key Results
The system helped reduce both dangerous lows (hypoglycemia) and dangerous highs (hyperglycemia) in both groups. However, people with Type 2 diabetes did even better:
- Low blood sugar (<70 mg/dL): Type 2 patients spent about half as much time in dangerous lows compared to Type 1 patients (0.43% vs 0.86% of the day).
- Severe high blood sugar (>300 mg/dL): Type 2 patients spent far less time in extreme highs (1.8% vs 9.3% of the day).
Why This Matters for Patients
Fully closed-loop systems are exciting because they take much of the guesswork out of insulin management β no carb counting or meal announcements needed. This study confirms the technology is both safe and effective across different types of diabetes, offering a promising option for people who struggle with blood sugar control.
Important Caveats
This was a relatively small study (52 participants) conducted at single centers. Larger, longer studies are needed before this technology becomes widely available for all diabetes patients.
