GLP-1 Shots Ranked for Heart & Kidney Protection in T2D

What Was This Study About?

People with type 2 diabetes face higher risks of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease. Researchers wanted to find out which injectable GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic, Trulicity, and Victoza) do the best job protecting the heart and kidneys — not just lowering blood sugar.

How Was It Done?

Scientists reviewed 15 large clinical trials involving more than 90,000 adults with type 2 diabetes. They used a special statistical method called a network meta-analysis to compare all the medications against each other, even when they weren't directly tested head-to-head in the same trial.

What Did They Find?

All of the injectable GLP-1 medications studied offered meaningful heart and kidney benefits compared to placebo or standard care. However, some performed better than others:

• Efpeglenatide ranked #1 for both heart protection (27% lower risk of major heart events) and kidney protection (32% lower risk of kidney decline).
• Albiglutide and semaglutide (Ozempic/Rybelsus) also ranked highly for heart protection.
• Dulaglutide (Trulicity) and liraglutide (Victoza) provided significant benefits as well, though with lower rankings.
